Sci-Dentity

Sci-Dentity was a three year research project led by Drs. June Ahn, Mega Subramaniam, Allison Druin and Kenneth Fleischmann studying how to encourage engagement with Science, Technology, Engineering and Math in middle school students using social media, creative storytelling, information literacy and school libraries.

I was a graduate research associate on this project and my roles included developing and executing after school lessons to sixth and seventh grade students to foster the development of their STEM identity and storytelling, participating in data collection and analysis.

The Everyday Life Information Practices of Teen Nerdfighters

This poster examines teen Nerdfighters across a variety of social media platforms. Using both survey and interview data, this poster draws maps of engagement to reflect on teen Nerdfighters’ selection practices and flows between social media platforms. In the Nerdfighter community, teens are drawn to different platforms based on the subcommunities represented there and the affordances of the specific platform. They distinguish between subcommunites, not platforms and will move fluidly between different social media platforms, while conceiving of them as the same.

A Nice Place on the Internet

This poster examines the everyday life information practices of teen Nerdfighters. Combining observation of online communities, with qualitative interviews and diaries, as well as demographic surveys and document analysis, this poster helps create understanding of how teens leverage their online communities for information needs far beyond the scope of the fan community. This poster will be presented at the Association for Information Science and Education Annual Meeting in February, 2018. [Extended Abstract]
